EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ NOVA Middle School’s online auction is live and offers unique prizes that support student programs while bidding will end Saturday, March 22 at 6 p.m. ThurstonTalk
- ➤ The Olympia School District board held its first reading of a new domestic violence leave policy on March 13. The policy allows employees to take paid or unpaid leave to get help with health care or legal needs and provides safety measures for survivors and their families—aligning with state law. JOLT
- ➤ On February 7, Tumwater School District held its second middle school Career Fair at Bush Middle School where nearly 30 mentors and more than 100 community members met with students to discuss their future careers. Teacher Kim Griffin said the event showed how work-based learning builds career planning—and the district will soon expand its CTE summer programs. ThurstonTalk
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ People will rally on the steps of the Capitol building in Olympia today to oppose planned cuts to Medicaid, healthcare, higher education, long-term care, and more (the protest aims to protect vital services) as community members voice their concerns (many fear the changes will hurt vulnerable groups). - ➤ The Olympia City Council reviewed a draft regional ordinance that would require home sellers to obtain a Home Energy Score before listing their property to provide clear energy efficiency data for buyers. Climate Program Specialist Jaron Burke presented the proposal on March 11 as part of a regional effort by the Thurston Climate Mitigation Collaborative, with the policy set to begin on May 1 (Olympia’s share is estimated at $20,250). - ➤ Olympia High School girls fastpitch team beat Tumwater High School 12-2 in a non-league game (played at Stevens Field on March 14) as senior Ava Bautista led the win by allowing one run, striking out five in six innings, and hitting three home runs. ThurstonTalk
- ➤ Athletes at The Evergreen State College competed in track events this past weekend—Izabelle Trefts won the women’s 1,500-meter run in 5:14.19 and placed among the top 10 in the 5,000 while Rowan Hicks finished seventh in the men’s 1,500 run. In wrestling, Flor Parker Borrero took third and Nizhoni Tallman placed eighth at the NAIA Championships—both earning All-America honors. ThurstonTalk
