- ➤ Author Sylvia Peterson and local documentary filmmaker Troy Kirby will show the award-winning film 'The House' on March 28 at the Capital Campus Columbia Screening Room—tickets cost $20 and come with a book signing and Q&A. The film looks at sexual predators in Washington and how their acts have affected local communities—setting the stage for future discussions on policy change. ThurstonTalk
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Annette Roth has become the first Executive Director of the new Pacific Salish Economic Development District & she will lead efforts to boost growth and secure federal grants for Thurston, Mason, Grays Harbor & Pacific Counties. Roth will work on setting up essential processes like forming a managerial board and launching a website to support regional projects. ThurstonTalk
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Olympia School District’s ongoing partnership with Puget Sound Energy saved more than 450,000 kilowatt hours of electricity & 35,000 therms in gas over the past two years, cutting carbon emissions equivalent to those of 66 homes. At a meeting on March 13th, PSE outlined energy controls upgrades and reported that Capital and Olympia high schools met the Clean Buildings Standard. JOLT

- ➤ City Manager Jay Burney presented a proposal on March 17 that includes a $500,000 grant program to help speed up permit approvals for affordable housing projects. Local nonprofits—Homes First and Habitat for Humanity—have said slow permitting has raised costs and added barriers for low-income families. JOLT

- ➤ Capital Mall will host indoor spring events in April that start on Saturday, April 5 with the Easter Bunny joining interactive story times, hair painting, and crafts for families. The bunny will be available for photo sessions until April 19 (from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday), and the mall will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 20.
