CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders said yesterday that a new law requiring safer x-ray body scanners is letting drugs enter Washington jails as officials work to curb contraband smuggling. FOX13
- ➤ On March 2, Olympia Police arrested 27-year-old Dayton Dziedziak after he allegedly attacked a woman and others outside a bar (located on the 400 block of 4th Avenue E) and resisted arrest by charging at officers (resulting in one count of second-degree assault and three counts of third-degree assault). JOLT
- ➤ Thurston County Sheriff’s Office officials treated two inmates for fentanyl overdoses at the county jail, with one inmate receiving three doses of Narcan and CPR on March 17 before being rushed to hospital and a second inmate overdosing on March 22 before being stabilized. FOX13
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The City of Olympia is searching for a new poet laureate in a two-year role that will use poetry to explore resilience through workshops and public events+ applications close May 19 and the winner will receive a $2,000 annual stipend along with additional funding for program expenses. JOLT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ High school students from Black Hills, Olympia, Timberline and Tumwater won awards at the 52nd annual regional art show for ESD 113 as organizers chose 26 pieces to advance to a state contest. Superintendent Flip Herndon will honor the winners at a reception in Tumwater on March 27 (6 p.m.) and the top artworks will move to the state-level competition on May 14 at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts. - ➤ At the Columbia Room on Washington Capitol Campus, Saint Martin's University will host a screening of 'The House' and a sexual assault awareness talk by survivor Sylvia Peterson at 6 p.m. on March 28—RSVP is required by March 26 due to limited space. JOLT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Joint Animal Services saw a 28% increase in dog intake last year with nearly 300 additional dogs and a total of 3,305 cases, and they completed 1,200 spay and neuter surgeries and 2,200 medical exams with help from over 140 volunteers. The agency is planning to build a new 20,000—square-foot facility to replace its aging 1996 building and is discussing funding options as current resources of $7.5 million fall short of the estimated $40 million needed.
