EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Superintendent Patrick Murphy praised Roosevelt Elementary School’s Reading Buddies program at a March 27 meeting in Olympia—older students helped kindergarteners build reading skills and confidence. The initiative has inspired similar efforts in other schools. JOLT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On April 2nd, lawmakers passed a transportation budget and considered a fee based on fuel efficiency to help close a billion-dollar gap in funding for $15.2 billion in projects. The fee would charge very efficient cars $75 to $100 (it exempts cars that get less than 25 mpg) and would not apply to electric or plug-in hybrids (which have separate registration fees). FOX13
- ➤ The Thurston Regional Planning Council is inviting community members from Olympia to help design new crosswalks along Martin Way at an open house from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on April 30 at the Intercity Transit offices on Pattison Street—feedback and collision data will shape plans for up to 10 additional crosswalks.
