CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A traffic stop on Capitol Way S turned into a drug bust on April 2 when police found over one pound of fentanyl and methamphetamine and discovered the driver had an outstanding warrant and visible paraphernalia—prompting the use of K9 Arco—and a search warrant led to the recovery of a scale, small bags, a shotgun, and a rifle. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ During the 2023 to 2024 school year, 32.9% of high school and 27.5% of middle school students took part in sports, giving an overall rate of 30.9% as reported by Executive Director James Whitehead on April 10th—officials noted the middle school figure might rise once the missing data is received—. JOLT
- ➤ On April 10, Olympia School District recognized 12 teachers who earned or maintained National Board Certification after a rigorous process that tested their classroom skills—seven maintained and five earned certification. School principals read the names before awarding certificates to honor the educators. JOLT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Capital Area Regional Public Facilities District is accepting applications for two vacant board seats that serve Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater and Thurston County; one term ends March 1, 2028 and the other expires March 1, 2029. A review of applications is set for mid-June and appointments will be approved by each jurisdiction’s legislative body. JOLT
- ➤ Underground utility work began yesterday on Fones Road between Home Depot's north entrance and 17th Way SE as crews dig to move power lines and repair water pipes and driveways using steel plates — officials said residents will be told one day ahead if driveways need to close — and the work is expected to last about two weeks. - ➤ Thurston Regional Housing Council said Thurston County will soon get about $5.5 million from a $45 million state allocation for its Right-of-Way program—aimed at moving people from highway encampments. Local officials, including Olympia Mayor Dontae Payne, are meeting with the governor's office to request continued funding and prevent a return to the streets. JOLT
