CRIME NEWS
- ➤ FBI and Lacey police are increasing their search for a suspect who set off an explosion at a Tesla charging station on April 8th at South Sound Center near Target and Kohl's in Lacey—receiving several 911 calls—and now ask the public to send digital photos and videos to help see if the act was linked to terrorism. - ➤ Authorities discovered the remains of 82-year-old Marcia Norman, a missing grandmother from Tenino, on April 15th. FOX13
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Olympia Downtown Alliance is accepting performer applications from local and regional artists for Music in the Park 2025, a free concert series set to take place on Wednesdays in July at Sylvester Park and Port Plaza+ the application deadline is May 14. ThurstonTalk
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Individuals interested in running for the Olympia School District Board of Directors will join a candidate workshop at 111 Bethel St. NE on April 22 from 5-6:30 p.m.-led by the Washington State School Directors’ Association to explain board roles and answer questions. The event provides key insights for those planning to run for District 3 or District 5 board member positions. JOLT
- ➤ The Olympia School District will launch the new Skyward Qmlativ system in July to update student information, payroll, finance, human resources and family access (this upgrade follows over a year of planning by several departments). Staff training will occur before the 2025-26 school year and timeline updates will be shared during the 2024-25 school year (the transition is managed by the Washington School Information Processing Cooperative). GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Ferguson said the state will appeal FEMA's decision to deny disaster funds—FEMA did not provide a reason for the denial. FOX13
- ➤ On April 14, the Port of Olympia awarded a $2.1 million contract to Tucci & Sons Inc. to rehabilitate about 700 feet of pavement and upgrade the runway lights at Olympia Regional Airport. The project is 95% funded by an FAA grant and will start after Sept. 1—when the streaked horned lark breeding season ends—without changing the runway to handle larger aircraft. JOLT
- ➤ Thurston Regional Planning Council is advancing its plan for 10 new Martin Way mid-block crossings to improve safety for pedestrians and transit users+ over 180 residents provided input that helped define priority spots, with work set to finish in June and final plans presented in July. JOLT
