Good morning, Olympia. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 22nd of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Olympia has opened its Water Resources Through Art contest for middle school students and other local learners to submit original art that shows water conservation and stormwater pollution prevention—entries are due May 30. Selected artists will earn a $50 gift card and recognition at a city council meeting in October, and their work will feature in the 2026 calendar.  JOLT
  • The Tumwater Craft District has become a popular spot where local residents and visitors enjoy craft drinks, tasty local food, live music, and handmade goods (including small-batch brews and unique crafts) that continue Thurston County’s brewing legacy. Developers will add a new french bistro later this spring and plan to build more outdoor event spaces (for example an amphitheater for festivals) to welcome more guests.  ThurstonTalk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County will run themed summer camps from June 23 through August 22 to offer weekday programs (7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) with hands-on activities, field trips and special events for first through 12th graders at sites in Lacey (Tumwater, Yelm, Rochester and Steamboat Island) while charging $150 per week per child with fee support available.  ThurstonTalk
  • Leilonie Perez, a third grader at Olympic View Elementary School, won the Shirlee Lehnis Literacy Champion Award for Youth from South Sound Reading Foundation after running small free libraries in Thurston County with her parents. Perez built libraries at friends’ houses, a local cat cafe — one for adult books and one for children — and a chiropractor and keeps them well-stocked with donated books.  JOLT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Olympia City Council meets today at 6 p.m. to consider a resolution that would replace the Olympia Municipal Court with Thurston County District Court due to budget constraints and costly repairs at the Lee Creighton Justice Center + the plan would allow a six-month period to sort out how to transfer court services and preserve local roles like prosecution and public defense.  JOLT
