Nonprofits in Thurston County are planning a series of events in May on housing, climate, and farming—YWCA Olympia will host a workshop on the housing crisis on May 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m, Homes First will celebrate community heroes on May 2 at The Heritage Room, the South Sound Action Convention will review climate plans on May 17, and LOCALvore will support farmland preservation on May 7.

Thurston County authorities charged handyman Jeffrey Zizz with murder, kidnapping, and unlawful disposal of remains after 82-year-old Marcia Norman was reported missing on April 5 and her body was found on April 9 buried under a shed near McIntosh Lake — he is set to return to court today with arraignment scheduled for May 6.

Residents are invited to join the annual Olympia Wooden Boat Festival on May 10 and 11 to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend.

The event will run on May 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a block party from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on May 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with art, music & paint & sip experiences.

The Evergreen State College’s Building Services Manager Tammy Van Natta—who leads the team supporting Project SEARCH—received the Outstanding Employer Award for her work with a program that gives students with disabilities hands-on internship experience through a partnership with the Olympia School District and Morningside. The award, given for the first time in 15 years, honors the team’s work in training students in 25 different work areas.

Olympia City Council voted Tuesday, April 22 to direct staff to negotiate an interlocal agreement with Thurston County for judicial services (this move may eventually lead to a change in the municipal court).

Mayor Dontae Payne said council members (including Jim Cooper and Clark Gilman) considered long-term budget challenges and aging infrastructure while planning the next steps.

FC Olympia’s Artesian Soccer summer camp registration is open now for kids ages 6 to 15, and the camp will run weekly from 9 a.m. until noon from June 16 through August 8.

Scholarships are available through the Oly Soccer Foundation—parents can register online to choose which weeks work best.
