ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On July 3rd, 1909, at 5:45 p.m., a raging fire erupted at the National Wood Pipe Company at the foot of Jefferson Street and quickly spread as burning tar exploded and train cars caught fire—destroying the plant and damaging 60 nearby homes while a hundred volunteer firefighters fought the blaze.  ThurstonTalk

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Puget Sound Community College will present its 20th annual Student Art Exhibition at the Leonor R. Fuller Gallery from May 19 to June 13, displaying student artwork — including pieces in ceramics, drawing, printmaking, digital photography, mixed media, design and sculpture. The exhibition's opening reception is set for Friday, May 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.  JOLT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington lawmakers are preparing to finalize the state’s two-year budget by debating tax proposals and rainy day fund use to address a potential $16 billion deficit over the next four years. The budget — which will affect funding from July 1 to June 30 — is expected to be delivered today as lawmakers vote on pending legislation over the weekend.  FOX13
  • Olympia’s Land Use and Environment Committee reviewed a 2024 sidewalk study that found nearly 28,000 defects on 226 miles of sidewalks with tree roots causing about 70% of the severe issues — the committee is now exploring funding options and repair methods and will have new policy choices in 2026 along with a public sidewalk inventory in August. This examination comes after two recent repair projects that handled select high-traffic areas using both city crews and contractor repairs.  JOLT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penrose & Associates Physical Therapy in Lacey now offers regenerative medicine therapies that use tools such as Stimpod, EMTT, and Shockwave therapy to help patients recover from injuries and reduce pain—these treatments have been used in Europe and will be featured in workshops on May 15 for knee pain and on June 4 for arthritis and tendonitis.  ThurstonTalk
