COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The City of Olympia is inviting residents to vote on designs for new vinyl wraps on downtown traffic boxes — the winning 10 images will be printed and installed in summer and fall while chosen artists will receive a $500 honorarium. Residents must register on Engage Olympia and submit their votes by May 31. JOLT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ South Puget Sound Community College is hosting its second annual Career & Transfer Fair on May 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Olympia campus in the Health & Wellness Center, Building 31, where over 125 employers, colleges, and resource tables will offer job and transfer options along with free profile photos, snacks, and resume feedback. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Washington Department of Ecology is accepting public comments on the Hardel Mutual Plywood cleanup site in West Bay after new contamination in soil and groundwater was found. Residents may submit comments until June 2 at 11:59 p.m. (this period addresses cleanup only, not development). JOLT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, April 29, the Olympia City Council proclaimed May as Bicycle Month and set plans to build a downtown corridor from Sylvester Park to the east side—plus a west side corridor linking neighborhoods to Woodruff Park and Garfield Elementary School. The city also improved bike and pedestrian safety at 4th Avenue and Plum Street and will fund projects with $3.1 million from a sale tax while hosting the 38th annual Bicycle Community Challenge with a Bike to Work Day on May 15. - ➤ The Washington Legislature transferred the Capitol Lake estuary restoration project from the Department of Enterprise Services to the Department of Ecology as part of Senate Bill 5195, which passed on April 27 and set aside $14.75 million—Ecology must now complete updated designs and a lake management plan by Sept. 1 to guide further work on dam demolition, habitat creation, and other improvements. - ➤ Intercity Transit announced it will add more trips to bus routes starting May 4—routes 21, 45, 47 and 60 will run every 30 minutes on weekends while routes 12, 64, 67, 94 and 620 see schedule changes. Riders can call Customer Service at 360-786-1881 or visit the Olympia Transit Center from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for trip planning. JOLT
