At the turn of the 20th century, Daylight Bakery opened at 307 East Fourth Avenue next to the Rex Theater and gave away 300 free loaves on July 18, 1919 — it became known for its Peerless Bread and later Butter Krust bread — the bakery changed owners several times before closing in early December after 34 years in business.
