COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Capital Christian Center will host the Marketplace Summit for business leaders on June 6-7 with local speakers and networking opportunities—while the Moving Mountains Auction on June 8 at Solid Rock Ranch will raise funds for youth summer program scholarships.  ThurstonTalk

CRIME NEWS

  • A 54-year-old man named Robert Barry Leland was arrested after a deadly road rage incident on May 10 near Monique Court SE and Holmes Island Road SE in north Olympia, where his vehicle repeatedly struck a car carrying children and the victim suffered a fatal medical emergency—authorities reported that Leland was intoxicated and now faces charges including first-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence, and hit-and-run.  JOLT
  • A man wanted for shooting at a Thurston County deputy was arrested near the Nevada—California state line on Tuesday, May 13th.  FOX13
  • Damien Madison, 27, was arrested near the Nevada—California state line on Tuesday afternoon after a multi-state search for him following an alleged shooting at a Thurston County deputy, and his mother was also taken into custody with plans to send her back to Washington.  FOX13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A hazardous tree work project at Squaxin Park in Olympia will close the east side to vehicle traffic from the morning until (4 p.m.) on May 20 and until (noon) on May 21, affecting the northbound entrance, exit and bridge over East Bay Drive. Pedestrians and bikes may still access the park while staff guide traffic away from areas near the park bridge, Rose Garden and maintenance shops.  JOLT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Olympia visitors planning to watch the FIFA World Cup next summer will have a chance to combine game viewing with a coastal getaway, as local spots offer family-friendly attractions for fans. Grays Harbor County will feature beaches, museums, and local events (such as surf lessons at Westport Light State Park) while nearby sports bars stream the matches (including game-day specials).  ThurstonTalk
  • On May 9, track teams from North Thurston, Timberline and River Ridge high schools met in Tumwater at the 59th Shaner Invite meet. Tumwater High School hosted the event and placed first in the girls division while Olympia High School won the boys contest—coach Brad Hooper said the meet helped his young team prepare for postseason competition.  ThurstonTalk
