EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On May 22, the Olympia School District swore in one returning student and three new representatives for the 2025—26 school year at a board meeting. The board thanked former members and said the new students will advise on district decisions. JOLT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At its meeting tomorrow, the Olympia Community Livability and Public Safety Committee will review a recommendation from the Cultural Access Advisory Board to award about $1.3 million in grants to local nonprofits in arts, science and culture — and then send the proposal to the city council. The review follows the evaluation of 60 proposals from 70 applicants and adds a plan to allot $375,000 to support Cultural Access in Olympia schools — a move tied to funds from a local sales tax. - ➤ Volunteers with the Port of Olympia Harbor Patrol serve by patrolling local waterways and working with port officials to free a stalled boat near the Marine Terminal—making sure marine travel stays safe. The 22-member crew logs over 800 hours on the water and holds monthly training sessions—teaching key skills and inviting new community members to join. JOLT
- ➤ Olympia Transportation Engineer Joey Jones presented detailed plans to improve pedestrian and bike safety along State and Pacific avenues between Sawyer and Fir streets, including new sidewalks, separated bike lanes, raised bus platforms, and pedestrian islands. The project will start this year, be implemented in two phases, and finish by fall 2027 — the improvements are expected to reduce conflicts and help all road users stay safe. JOLT
