  • Matthew Klifman takes over as board chair of All Kids Win after founder Kelly Wilson steps back following 19 years of service—Klifman, a board member since 2019 and vice president at First Citizens Bank in Lacey, said his leadership will focus on expanding the volunteer-run food backpack program for local students.  ThurstonTalk

CRIME NEWS

  • The jailed stabbing suspect—arrested on May 13 after allegedly stabbing a grocery store employee—attacked a corrections deputy during recreation time on May 28 at Thurston County Jail by punching him and grabbing the cell keys before another deputy intervened, and the injured deputy was treated and released.  FOX13
  • Yesterday, an inmate at Thurston County Jail attacked a corrections deputy + attempted to steal his cell keys, according to authorities.  FOX13
  • A car chase in west Olympia on May 24 ended when a 34-year-old suspect's vehicle, speeding after failing to stop for expired registration, crashed in a residential area near Windolph Loop NW—police recovered a loaded firearm and noted his criminal history with an active warrant—and he was booked on multiple charges.  JOLT
  • On May 18, Olympia Police arrested Darel Jason Mitchell for allegedly burglarizing a construction warehouse on Thurston Avenue NE after witnesses reported he was found sleeping inside the building and pushed a man who confronted him.  JOLT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Thurston Regional Planning Council is asking residents and business owners along Martin Way to share feedback on 10 planned crosswalk locations via an online survey open until Saturday, May 31—data that will help guide design improvements to boost pedestrian safety. The project, begun in June 2024 in collaboration with Olympia, Lacey and Intercity Transit, is now moving into its design phase.  JOLT
  • House Bill 1878, signed this month by the governor, will require drivers under 21 to complete driver’s ed by 2030 — starting with 18-year-olds in 2027 — and mandate safe driving courses for those with multiple traffic tickets. The law also creates a voucher program and expands online and one-day behind-the-wheel training to help improve road safety.  FOX13
