COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2025, a homeless man named Henry pitched a small tent near the public restroom on 4th Avenue East in downtown Olympia because he needed a toilet (the facility was closed due to a waterline leak). Officials say repairs will begin and finish this summer.  JOLT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Olympia-based historian Ira Wesley Kitmacher revisits the SS Valencia disaster, a steamer that sank on Monday, Jan. 22 off Vancouver Island and cost 181 lives, sparking federal safety changes and leaving a lasting mark on local memory, including its influence on street naming.  JOLT
  • At its May 27 meeting, the Olympia Heritage Commission discussed preserving the historic Sandman tugboat by salvaging its wheelhouse as an interactive display + creating a digital 3D rendering to archive artifacts. Local groups will have priority to acquire salvaged pieces as preservation plans move forward.  JOLT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Puget Sound Energy will begin work on Black Lake Boulevard between Park Drive SW and Ken Lake Drive SW on Monday, June 1, affecting traffic from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily until June 22. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes + residents and businesses will maintain access.  JOLT
