Between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2025, a homeless man named Henry pitched a small tent near the public restroom on 4th Avenue East in downtown Olympia because he needed a toilet (the facility was closed due to a waterline leak).
Officials say repairs will begin and finish this summer.

Olympia-based historian Ira Wesley Kitmacher revisits the SS Valencia disaster, a steamer that sank on Monday, Jan.
22 off Vancouver Island and cost 181 lives, sparking federal safety changes and leaving a lasting mark on local memory, including its influence on street naming.
At its May 27 meeting, the Olympia Heritage Commission discussed preserving the historic Sandman tugboat by salvaging its wheelhouse as an interactive display + creating a digital 3D rendering to archive artifacts.
Local groups will have priority to acquire salvaged pieces as preservation plans move forward.

Puget Sound Energy will begin work on Black Lake Boulevard between Park Drive SW and Ken Lake Drive SW on Monday, June 1, affecting traffic from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily until June 22.
Drivers are advised to take alternate routes + residents and businesses will maintain access.
