- ➤ Capital Mall is hosting free summer events every week in June to offer fun and varied activities for local families. Planned events include a vintage pop-up shop opening today, a drum performance on June 4, a trading card show and craft vendor market on June 14 and 15, a magician show with a blood drive on June 23, and a First Responder career fair on June 28 — all designed to engage the community. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A corrections deputy was allegedly assaulted by inmate Nathaniel David Foster at Thurston County jail on Wednesday, May 28 when the deputy opened the cell for recreation — the inmate unexpectedly punched him and attempted to seize cell keys before other deputies subdued him, and the officer was later evaluated and cleared at a hospital. - ➤ At a board meeting on May 22, Olympia School District officials revealed an underlying funding gap of $2,647,000 as projections show expenses will exceed revenues by $2.6 million in the next school year. The district will continue its budget process until June to address the shortfall — officials are reviewing measures such as enrollment tracking and special education cost controls. JOLT

- ➤ Thurston County’s new 'Lock It Up' program offers free gun safety devices such as cable and trigger locks to help residents store guns securely—reducing risks of accidents and misuse. - ➤ Olympia High School's Cameron and Tucker Downing finished in the top 10 at the 4A State Championship in javelin in Tacoma on May 29—Cameron placed second and Tucker sixth.
