- ➤ South Sound Parent to Parent has heard from local families who worry that autism diagnoses may not be kept private after remarks by HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr.—the group urges families to ask providers how they protect records and offers support to those in Thurston, Mason, Grays Harbor and Kitsap counties. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Evergreen State College’s Shelton Promise program marked key milestones as program manager Monear Fatemi received the Brad Owen Excellence in Mentoring Award on May 14 — and new legislative funding secures support for another cohort of high school students. More than 50 students have been accepted, 75% of Cedar High seniors plan to attend Evergreen, and a new alumni mentor network is in place to help incoming students. ThurstonTalk
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Olympia's Community Livability and Public Safety Committee approved 2025 CDBG funding recommendations that will allocate $341,000 for programs supporting affordable housing and services for low- and moderate-income residents. The recommendations will move to the full city council for final approval, with the program year set to begin Sept. 1. JOLT
- ➤ Olympia’s Utility Advisory Committee will review two programs that lower development costs for affordable housing—one offering a 50% discount on the general facilities charge and the other funding infrastructure improvements with increased utility rates. The committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. on June 5 in Room 207 at City Hall as more projects are expected to apply before year end. JOLT
- ➤ The City of Olympia announced that nighttime underground utility work will begin Monday, June 9 on Fones Road between the north entrance to Home Depot and Pacific Avenue SE as part of the multimillion-dollar Fones Road Corridor Project—crews will work from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday for about three weeks—and temporary driveway closures plus changes at the Karen Fraser Woodland Trail crossing will be in effect until an enhanced crossing is completed in summer 2026. - ➤ Thurston County Public Health and Social Services said the parasite that causes swimmer’s itch is at Long Lake in Lacey after several swimmers reported skin rashes—officials advise dry off immediately after swimming to reduce the risk—this reaction usually goes away on its own. ThurstonTalk
- ➤ Jessica Oliver went to Penrose & Associates Physical Therapy in Lacey for dry needling treatment after a fall left her with a fractured toe and heel pain. She reported instant relief from her pain and improvement in an old hip injury while following a daily exercise routine. ThurstonTalk
