COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Relay For Life of Thurston County will take place June 21-22 at North Thurston High School with a 'Relay Like It’s 1985' theme as 95 teams plan to raise funds for the American Cancer Society—volunteers and local groups have built early support through special fundraisers. TwinStar Credit Union is the presenting sponsor and backs programs for cancer survivors and caregivers—residents are invited to join the themed laps, contests and other activities during the relay.  ThurstonTalk

CRIME NEWS

  • Damien Madison, arrested for allegedly shooting deputies during a multi-state manhunt, was booked into Thurston County Jail on June 10th at 5:04 p.m. PDT.  FOX13
  • Damien Madison, a 10-time convicted felon arrested in Nevada last month during a multi-state manhunt for allegedly firing an AR-15 that hit a patrol car windshield in Tenino, was booked into Thurston County jail on charges of first-degree assault, first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, first-degree malicious mischief, and drive-by shooting — he is expected in court today while his mother and three others face charges for aiding his escape.  FOX13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Evergreen State College will honor the Class of 2025 with a commencement ceremony at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 13 (held at Red Square on the Olympia Campus). Keynote speaker Kwabi Amoah-Forson will address graduates while free parking is provided from June 10 to 12 for the extra visitors.  ThurstonTalk
  • South Puget Sound Community College has opened a new Welcome Center at its Olympia campus to help incoming students navigate campus life, enrollment, academic pathways, and community events—personalized guidance is available and support continues after hours through the Start Here team. The center is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will host its opening celebration during fall Welcome Week.  JOLT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On June 10, officials from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources warned that hot, dry weather pushed wildfire season to start early as human-caused sparks heightened fire risks. Commissioner Dave Upthegrove said that despite budget cuts, agencies remained ready to fight fires — urging residents to follow burn restrictions and clear defensible spaces.  FOX13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Demolition will begin this week on the pedestrian refuge island at Karen Fraser Woodland Trail as utility relocation work continues on the Fones Road Corridor Project. The City of Olympia says temporary safety measures—paint, traffic cones, and barriers—will stay in place until a new crossing is complete in summer 2026 and urges drivers to use detour routes.  JOLT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • People can kayak, paddle board or canoe on the slow Black River near Olympia which has two boat launches that require a Discover Pass. A property owner lets visitors pull off the river for a break — plan ahead for shallow spots — while the gentle current makes it a fun option for all ages.  ThurstonTalk
