COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thurston County will host several Fourth of July events, including the All-American Jubilee in Rainier on June 29 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., a fireworks show at Rainer Vista Park in Lacey on July 3 from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., a parade in Tumwater on July 4 at 11 a.m., a family festival with a casino fireworks show in Tumwater on July 4, and a bash with fireworks in Rochester on July 4 starting at 1 p.m.—the Boston Marina display has been cancelled due to safety concerns.  ThurstonTalk

CRIME NEWS

  • Damien Madison—accused of shooting at a deputy with an AR-15 during a multi-state manhunt and fleeing to Nevada—appeared in Thurston County court on Wednesday.  FOX13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North Thurston Public Schools celebrated educators who bring joy to learning by highlighting their creative ways to make classes fun and engaging—each teacher shared a moment that showed students discovering new ideas with excitement. The event honored staff members from various schools in the district who use hands-on activities and personal interactions to spark student curiosity.  ThurstonTalk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Thurston Regional Planning Council has launched a Bicycle Connectivity Strategy to improve cycling safety and connection across the county, and residents are invited to share feedback through an online survey open until June 30. The project will use crash data to identify high-risk areas and plan improvements — it is funded by a FHWA grant — and is set to continue until 2027.  ThurstonTalk
  • Today the Olympia City Council will hold a study session to review options for moving Municipal Court services after selling the Lee Creighton Justice Center to Squaxin Island Tribe. City staff recommended using city-owned property at 108 State St. and council chambers — they will also get briefings on Thurston County judicial services — with one-time transition costs estimated between $742,000 and $1.5 million while the court’s annual budget stays near $2.54 million.  JOLT
  • A signal pole at the southwest corner of Capitol Way and 14th Avenue will be replaced on Wednesday, June 18 by American Electrical Construction LLC (work scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.), and travelers will face lane closures, sidewalk impacts, noise, and a temporary traffic signal shutdown (flaggers will direct motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists) near Capitol Campus.  JOLT
