- ➤ Olympia has opened public voting for the 2025 Percival Plinth People's Choice Award through Aug. 1—voters can choose from 18 sculptures on display along the waterfront at Percival Landing, and the winning piece will become a permanent part of the city’s public art collection while its creator may receive up to $10,000. - ➤ On June 18, a woman returning a bicycle to a homeless encampment called The Jungle in Olympia was attacked by a group of people, and seven individuals were arrested—facing charges including first-degree attempted murder and assault. JOLT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Washington Middle School in Olympia will rename its cafeteria and electives hallway to honor retiring staff members. The cafeteria will honor longtime principal Paul Anders and the hallway will honor tech arts teacher Brian Morris as the school board plans to decide the new names later this summer. JOLT
- ➤ Evergreen State College alumnus Kwabi Amoah-Forson gave the keynote talk at the college’s 53rd commencement ceremony in Olympia on June 13—urging graduates never to give up hope and to use their skills to help those in need. - ➤ Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office awarded more than $148 million in grants to improve parks, trails, and wildlife habitat as well as support farmland and forestry. Thurston County received $7,177,314 as one of 242 projects in 35 counties — the grants will help keep outdoor spaces strong for Washingtonians. ThurstonTalk

- ➤ On July 2, the Intercity Transit Authority voted unanimously to remove the Log Cabin Road extension project from the regional transportation plan in Olympia — a move that reflects concerns about environmental impact and outdated planning. The authority will represent this stance on the Transportation Policy Board on July 9 as it helps shape future transportation decisions. JOLT
- ➤ Today the Olympia City Council will vote on a resolution to authorize a $988,928 design contract with Skillings, Inc. for the Elliott Avenue Sidewalk Project—part of a $5.85 million effort to add a sidewalk, separated bike lane, stormwater swale and upgraded streetlights that will improve travel safety and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
