Good morning, Olympia. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 13th of July.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mike Ballmes, a retired craftsman and veteran from Olympia, is building a 14-foot wooden kayak in his shop known as Opa’s Garage plus he also crafts custom surfboards and leather items with care and humor. He may sell the matching pair of his 14-foot and finished 17-foot kayaks for $25,000 if he finds a buyer who values his work.  JOLT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Suffragist Susan B. Anthony visited Olympia in 1871 to speak before the Washington Territorial Legislature after dining with local supporters at the Bigelow House Museum. She traveled by boat, train, and stagecoach — her diary noted the rough roads — and her clear arguments for women's voting rights helped spur future reform efforts.  ThurstonTalk
