  • Capital Lakefair returns to Heritage Park as the 68th festival begins today and runs until July 20+ the event will include a carnival, a car show, a parade and fireworks along with vendors selling food and handmade goods.  JOLT
  • Grass Lake Nature Park reopens after the City of Olympia’s Parks, Arts and Recreation Department finished improvements that add a 1.1-mile paved trail, a 365-foot boardwalk, and an 11-space parking area along Kaiser Road. The upgrades nearly double the park’s trail network and improve access to wetland areas while supporting environmental education.  JOLT

CRIME NEWS

  • A trial is underway in Thurston County for Ihsan Ali and Zahraa Ali, who are accused of attempting an honor killing when the father allegedly choked their 17-year-old daughter unconscious at a bus stop in October 2024—witnesses noted her eyes rolled back as her 16-year-old boyfriend intervened.  FOX13

  • Today the City of Olympia hosts a poetry event at Squaxin Park Rose Garden from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the book release of the anthology Still the Water: Olympia Poets on Place (edited by outgoing poet laureate Kathleen Byrd) where each poet will read one poem and guests can receive a copy.  JOLT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent updates show that the Bear Gulch Fire, which began on July 6 from a human-caused ignition near the north side of Lake Cushman, continues burning 10 miles northwest of Hoodsport in rugged terrain while crews remove brush and hazardous trees along NF Road 2400 to secure access for firefighters. Firefighters placed sprinklers near the Staircase Ranger Station and have ordered additional resources as warmer weather is expected to increase fire activity — NF Road 2400 remains closed to keep the public safe.  ThurstonTalk
