BUSINESS NEWS

  • OlyFed will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a community event in Yelm on Friday, August 1 from 9 a.m. to noon—free espresso drinks, donuts, $10 off coupons, and a $10 donation to Yelm Schools for new checking accounts are part of the festivities. Later this fall, the bank will launch a high school affinity card program to support student activities and continue its long record of local community support.  ThurstonTalk

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Thurston County Museum of Fine Arts will hold its first photography show called 'QUOTATION/MYTH' featuring local Washington-based photographers curated by David Hoekje—set to open on Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. and run until Sept. 13. The free-admission exhibition takes place at the museum on 120 Olympia Ave. NE in Olympia—displaying diverse photographic works.  JOLT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local nonprofit REC launched the Tree Ambassador Project with a City of Olympia Inspire Grant to measure the largest trees and show residents how trees help fight climate change—volunteers visited around 1,000 homes and recorded 1,520 trees, with a sequoia named the biggest known tree.  JOLT
  • The Bear Gulch Fire is burning in steep, rocky terrain in Olympic National Forest 10 miles northwest of Hoodsport as crews use heavy equipment to build fire breaks and remove fuels — efforts aimed at slowing the fire's spread. Firefighters will use aerial water drops and add more resources as warmer weather is expected to increase smoke and fire activity — locals are urged to follow road and trail closures.  ThurstonTalk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Intercity Transit is planning service changes that will take effect on Sept. 7 to add routes 600 and 610 for Lakewood and Joint Base Lewis-McChord while ending Route 620. The agency held a public hearing on July 16 for comments on the plan and equity analysis—and it will accept further input until Aug. 6.  JOLT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Thurston County Public Health & Social Services used a 2024 grant to purchase steel grab bars to reduce falls in senior homes, and they have installed 42 grab bars in partnership with Dickey’s Remodel & Repair (a local aging-in-place specialist) and Rebuilding Together Thurston County.  ThurstonTalk
