Good morning, Olympia. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 29th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Some residents in West Bay anchor out on old sailboats to deal with high rent while arguing that boat life does not mean homelessness, and many depend on local services for survival. The Olympia Police Department checks the boats to enforce safety rules—recent arrests for theft and assault show they act when laws are broken.  JOLT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters battled the Bear Gulch Fire in the Olympic National Forest 10 miles northwest of Hoodsport, which burned 1,094 acres and reached 10% containment while moving toward the Staircase area near Olympic National Park. The incident management team took charge of the nearby Hamma Fire—firefighters used direct attack and set closures on trails and roads to protect communities and public safety.  ThurstonTalk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 23, the Olympia Fire Department finished a report that found gaps in emergency response times at its four stations, with some meeting a 7.6-minute standard (NFPA 1710’s guideline) only 35–75% of the time while others took up to 11 minutes. The fire chief said the department will use new data analytics and may redraw station boundaries (Station 2 covers 7.7 square miles) to improve service, and the committee has approved the plan for council review.  JOLT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Providence Swedish is seeking former patients and family members to join its Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC), which helps improve care at its clinics. Members meet from noon to 2 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month (in person or by video) and must complete an application and interview process.  ThurstonTalk
