  • Megan Gillespie started Olympia Boss Society two years ago to help local businesswomen network without awkwardness—this group now hosts monthly two-hour connection nights with local speakers and has held over 50 events, including a podcast that shares business tips. The organization has grown to include 42 monthly members and partnerships with local woman-owned businesses that make genuine networking possible.  JOLT

CRIME NEWS

  • Two individuals were taken into custody on Saturday night, July 26 after a reported robbery and kidnapping that began with a drug-related transaction and escalated into violence; the suspects—Joshua Dale Krohn, 34 and Bailey Irish Smith, 32—were identified by Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and turned over to Olympia Police Department for further investigation.  JOLT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Olympia Arts & Heritage Alliance Museum opened in June (free admission is offered) and shows local art, culture and history in a 1,200-square-foot space with exhibits that change every few months. The museum works with local groups and will host a new maritime display during Labor Day weekend.  ThurstonTalk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Bear Gulch Fire burns in Olympic National Forest 10 miles northwest of Hoodsport with an estimated 1,275 acres and 10% containment. Firefighters use water drops and hoselays to safeguard key areas—fire is expected to intensify in warm, dry conditions until rain and snow arrive in the fall—while no evacuations are in effect.  ThurstonTalk

  • The Olympia City Council reviewed HB 1217 during a study session on Tuesday, July 29 at 6 p.m. at City Hall where staff explained three options—retaining stronger local tenant protections, deferring to state rules, or adopting a hybrid approach—and outlined changes for manufactured home communities.  JOLT
