ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Thurston County authorities advised residents west of Rainier to evacuate after a brush fire broke out on Wednesday at 4:20 p.m., with the zone set along Rainier Road Southeast, 138th Avenue Southeast and Military Road—emergency personnel report the fire is moving east.  FOX13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, The Rolling Pin on Olympia’s West Side offers summer culinary goods and accessories for local shoppers with both online orders and curbside pickup — staff add new items based on customer suggestions. The store is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will hold back to school sales from August 25 to September 21 with special discounts for SPSCC culinary students.  ThurstonTalk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Olympia City Council unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance aimed at closing regulatory gaps and strengthening oversight of massage and reflexology businesses amid concerns of illicit activity — including unlicensed practices linked to human trafficking. Interim Police Chief Shelby Parker presented the proposal on Aug. 12 and noted a second reading is scheduled for Sept. 9, with the ordinance set to take effect on Oct. 1.  JOLT
  • The Port of Olympia awarded a $1.07 million contract to Miles Resources to strengthen a half-mile section of Marine Drive NE from the marine terminal gate to Olympia Avenue and update pedestrian ramps using state grant funds—approval came from an Aug. 11 meeting and construction will take 45 days once it starts.  JOLT

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Tuesday, Aug 12 at the Olympia City Council meeting, the Youth Council debuted a 60 second PSA that taught overdose signs and how Naloxone can save lives (it will be shown on TV3 and shared with schools and community groups).  JOLT

  • Emanuel Scott was hired as the new head men’s wrestling coach at Evergreen State College today and he begins work right away. He brings coaching experience from Kentucky Wesleyan, Chadron State, and Iowa Lakes to help the team in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.  ThurstonTalk
