The Olympia City Council discussed using council goal funds to support local food banks and assist residents impacted by the federal shutdown that suspended SNAP benefits.

Councilman Jim Cooper proposed a $10,000 allocation while City Manager Jay Burney will review the available $100,000—more than 35,000 SNAP recipients in Thurston County face shortages.

Franklin Street Harm Reduction, located at 704 Franklin St. SE downtown, offers coffee, snacks and peer support for adults facing substance use, mental health and homelessness challenges — it holds drop-in meetings at 9 a.m. weekdays, provides a syringe exchange on Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 5 p.m. with free HIV, Hepatitis C and Syphilis testing on Tuesday from noon to 3 p.m. — and welcomes donations for items like belts and bras.
